I just read from Apple that they pre-sold over 600,000 iPhone 4 phones in a single day. Well, actually in less than a single day.
iPhone 4 pre-ordering was first enabled about 4am (EST) yesterday. Throughout the day, most people were unable to order due to server issues at AT&T. 600,000+ lucky people were able to pre-order, nevertheless. AT&T said pre-orders were 10 times higher than that of the iPhone 3GS, the current iPhone.
Apple said that this blew by their expectations:
The statement read, "it was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions." They apologized to those that were unable to buy them, "customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock," said Apple.
I am just amazed that 600,000 people were able to place an pre-order with all those server issues.
