Let me start off with a bit of history. A while back, we needed a solution that would provide for load balancing of our T1 and Cable line Internet connections, VPN support, firewall and routing capabilities. We decided to go with the Symantec Firewall 200r, which offered all of these. This firewall seemed to not do basic firewall functions, such as block IP blocks or IP addresses from entering the network. It seems as if, a hacker from an ISP within China has been attacking our local testing servers. We do not run any of our production sites on these servers but it has been incredibly annoying. I will not say exactly what this predator is doing but its just a real annoyance. Today, I purchased a
Cisco PIX to solve the firewall problem. In addition to this devices fundamental firewall capabilities, the VPN software should work on Mac operating systems. We will be using both the Symantec and the Cisco now. Symantec will probably just be used for load balancing, whereas the Cisco will perform all the other networking functions we need including; VPN, firewall, routing and peace of mind.
