On July 4th, a few of us came to the office all day to upgrade our network to support gigabit speeds. After the upgrade was complete, our internal network was super fast but our Internet speeds topped off at around 250 megabits per second down and 50 megabits per second upload. That was primarily powered off our cable line from Optimum. We also had a backup Verizon FiOS line at 100 megabits per second down and up.
FiOS in the past few weeks began supporting gigabit Internet speeds here, so we decided to upgrade. That upgrade happened just hours ago and we are now seeing speeds of close to 900 megabits per second down and 930 megabits per second up. That is an insane speed increase. So fast, the normal speed test tools, including that from speedtest.net didn't even show the speed.
Instead, I compared the speeds using the Google Fiber speed test tool and here is the before and after.
Optimum cable speed on gigabit network maxing out at 250/50:
Verzion FiOS speed reaching 900/900, which technically is 100/100 below gigabit:
Technically, before we upgraded our internal network to support gigabit, even with the optimum speeds, we were only able to hit 180/45 or so at best.
Now, what are we going to do with all this speed?
