Goodbye Apple Cinema Display

Published April 20, 2018

For the past decade, I've been using the same Apple Cinema Display for my office set up.  Before that, I used an older Apple Display but then on July 20, 2011 they stopped producing new models and in 2014 they stopped selling them on their web site.

For the past couple weeks, my Apple LED Cinema Display 24-Inch MB382LL/A (no longer on Amazon but this is the one I purchased) started to flicker, turn off randomly and stop functioning normally.  So I had to get a new display but one not from Apple.

I asked around on Facebook and went with an LG display that supports USB C inputs.  It is super HD and really nice but the best part of the switch is that I was able to use the vesa mount and mount two of my displays side by side in a cleaner fashion.  So I have an older Samsung display where I keep Slack on the right side of this new LG display which is where I do my primary work. I also keep TweetDeck on my smaller laptop screen on the side.

Here is a GIF of my work station before and after:

It is a bit cleaner and organized, in fact, I was able to clean it up more after making the GIF.

The new lower resolution will take a bit of getting use to but I am getting there.  Technically, it would be nicer to have the same exact display next to it on the right, but for Slack only, it doesn't really make financial sense.  Maybe in a year or two if this monitor drops in price, I'll get it then but for now, this new set up is pretty nice.  It also hooks up nicely to my set up with my Belkin dock.
