Anyone who knows me, I am not a fan of using the phone. People know I am obsessed with email and look for ways to prevent people from calling me. But even I, yes me, admit there are times when a phone conversation is more efficient than email.
Now, I am not talking about what is "better" but what is more "efficient." Some may argue that emails come off cold and insensitive - that may be true, but that isn't always related to efficiency. What I am talking about are email threads that go back and forth, where the email conversation has people going back and forth but the people really aren't on the same page. 40 email threads later, they get on the same page and then emails start to get to a solution.
I had one of those email threads yesterday and eventually it lead to a phone call. The phone call got everyone on the same page and then it came back to email, but efficient email. I am sure the client will read this and agree, and I am sure this happens to most of you about once a week - so I doubt anyone will be insulted.
But I wanted to document that even I find certain phone calls more efficient than email. It doesn't change my mind that most, 90%, of communication should still be done over email. :)
