In 2008, I did things the old fashion way - I actually went to the bank to deposit checks for the company. It likely took about an hour of my time per week, based on the average number of bank runs I made. In fact, I often conned my wife into going for me so I didn't have to take the 15-20 minutes to go there and back. But in late 2008, that all stopped when my bank offered me Remote Check Deposit.
Remote Check Deposit allows you to conduct check deposits directly from your computer, while at your office (or I guess home). They gave me a scanner, similar to the one they use in the banks, and a web site with a username and password and I was off to the races. I cannot remember the last time I entered a bank since then.
I do like the bank people, in fact, they do touch base every now and then to make sure I remember who they are. But I am so glad I don't have to make those trips to the bank to do something as basic and routine as depositing checks. Heck, there are even iPhone apps that allow you to remotely deposit your checks.
This week, I was chatting with someone who was complaining about not having time to do bank runs. I asked, why do you bother, why don't you just sign up for remote check deposit? He never heard of it. Which is why I am blogging it.
