The number of unsolicited spam phone calls I get on my mobile phone has been so bad, I simply do not answer phone calls anymore unless the number is from a contact already in my phone.
The worse part is that most of these calls come from numbers that appear to be familiar, like in your same area code, sometimes even that start with the same 6 digits as my mobile phone number. They do this on purpose, to try to trick you into answering. The NPR has a whole story on this named Familiar-Looking Numbers Are The Latest Twist In Robocalls.
Here are some calls in the past 24 hours, only one was real. Yea, I don't talk much on my mobile phone or in general, so I don't get many real phone calls to my cell:

I double checked and my number is listed on the Do Not Call Registry, but I guess it doesn't matter.
Honestly, I feel like my mobile number is worthless now. In fact, when I get a call, I barely look at who is calling anymore and if it is from a number not in my contact list, I let it go to voicemail 99.9999% of the time. This is unless I am expecting a call from someone that I do not have their number but even then, I'd likely let it go to voicemail and call them back if they leave a message. I figured, if it is important enough, they would leave a message.
My fear is that these robocallers start leaving voicemails and then I have to start listening to the voicemails. So far this has not happened for the most part.
